“Let food be thy medicine, thy medicine shall be thy food.”
Hippocrates, Ancient Greek physician
I have travelled to many places and I have to say that Greece is one of my favourite travel destinations. I love the history, philosophy, food and people of Greece. We went to Greece with colleagues who had become friends. Our two-week trip was filled with laughter, Greek gods, stories of the past, amazing architecture, warm hospitality and lots of ouzo and gyros!
You only have to spend a day in Greece to see that Greek people live a prosperous life with plenty of fresh food and drink. Gyro is one of the Greek foods that has become a staple in North America. The word gyros, pronounced Yee-ros, is the Greek word for spin. Everywhere in Athens, and on many of the islands we visited, you can see meat being spun outside in brick ovens to make delicious and healthy gyros. When the meat is ready, it is folded into a flatbread with a dollop of yogurt sauce.
This week I made chicken gyros, wrapped them in flatbread and served them with red onions, greens and a tzatziki sauce sprinkled with spices I bought in Crete, Greece. To say they were delicious would be an understatement. When you start eating plant-based, unprocessed foods, your taste buds will change and realize how fresh, delicious, and impressive food can be.
If you ever have the opportunity to travel to Greece, be aware that you will travel back in time and encounter remnants of Greek mythological gods. You will also experience the hospitality and warmth of the citizens. If you can’t make it to Greece in your lifetime, you can recreate gyros in your kitchen for you and your family to enjoy!
